ZapThink Note: Mindreef: Scaling up SOA Quality PDF Print E-mail

February 11, 2008
By Jason Bloomberg, ZapThink

Maintaining the quality of Services and Service compositions as part of a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) initiative is far more complex than traditional software quality assurance. Organizations who are implementing SOA must manage quality across the full Service lifecycle, including design time, runtime, and change time, and furthermore, SOA quality teams must contain a more diverse set of people than traditional software quality requires. As a result, organizations require a new set of tools like the Mindreef SOAPscope Server product family to maintain SOA quality as SOA initiatives ramp up to full enterprise scale.  ...

The Mindreef SOAPscope Server family of SOA Quality tools offers SOA teams the ability to collaboratively manage SOA quality across the Service lifecycle. The new desktop products SOAPscope Architect, Tester, and Developer offer a straightforward entry point for SOA Quality, plus an upgrade path to the collaborative, enterprise-ready SOAPscope Server. ...

There are several reasons why SOA complicates the software quality challenge. First and foremost, SOA requires that organizations maintain quality across the Service lifecycle, including design time, runtime, and change time. As a result, quality assurance is no longer solely a design time set of activities, and now requires a more diverse set of tools to manage. Secondly, the SOA quality team is far more diverse than a traditional QA team, because it contains architects, operations and support personnel, in addition to the testers, developers, and project managers that traditional projects require. For these reasons, tools like the Mindreef SOAPscope Server product family can be an invaluable part of the SOA team’s toolbox.

XML: Mindreef Adds to SOA Testing PDF Print E-mail
February 2, 2008

Mindreef is bolstering security verification in its server-based SOA testing software and adding three new client products for SOA quality. SOAPscope Server 6.1 and three new client products are being offered to verify quality. The company's SOAPscope Server 6.1 enables teams to test the quality of SOA, and is focused on the XML layer.

Mindreef's Grossman: "XML is pretty much what is communicated across the wire between all the pieces of an SOA so it's very important. Version 6.1 makes it easier to test for WS-Security adherence in an SOA. Now, we have security profiles, which means you can have an architect set up all the pieces they need. Testers can verify security components, such as X.509 certificates."

The three client products being added to the SOAPscope line include: (1) Architect 6.1, offering design-time governance and an SOA quality and testing platform for policy rules authoring, design-time support, prototyping, change-time, and run-time support; (2) Tester 6.1, for load testing and test automation; quality problems and potential performance bottlenecks can be spotted; (3) Developer 6.1, featuring tools for problem diagnosis and resolution, unit testing, and support of service consumers. Developers and engineers can build and test Web services and SOA and automate XML-oriented tasks.

Functionality of the three client products is included in SOAPscope Server 6.1.  ....

Free White Paper Walks You Through Hazards of SOA Testing

At the beginning of this year, I shared 10 SOA tips from 2007 for success in 2008. For those of you who missed it, tip number eight was, “Revamp your testing process.” If you’re not sure why, here’s a long list of reasons why SOA requires a new approach to testing.

In the past, I’ve found precious little about how to do SOA testing. But this week, I found what’s easily the most comprehensive free resource I’ve ever seen on SOA testing.

“Key Strategies for SOA Testing” is a 40-page handbook that walks you through the issues you need to address when testing services. It’s co-written by SOA guru David Linthicum of ZapThink and Jim Murphy, the vice president of Product Management for Mindreef, a vendor that offers tools for deploying Web services. ... The idea for the handbook apparently emerged after Linthicum interviewed Mindreef’s founder and CTO, Frank Grossman, for Linthicum’s SOA Visionaries podcast. You can download the podcast or read the transcript.

I’ve “flipped” through the PDF and I must say, it’s an impressive piece of work, particularly given that it’s free. .... It’s surprisingly detailed and thorough for a free white paper. In fact, I give it two thumbs up and a “better than Cats."

On the Lookout for SOA Profits - The Key to ROI's in the Quest for Quality
By Frank Grossman, Mindreef
February, 2008

Quality -- you know it when you see it. Yet the concept of quality has little meaning unless it's related to a specific service, object, experience or desired result. As the use of service-oriented architecture moves from early adopters to mainstream corporate initiatives, companies are struggling to achieve their intended goals of business agility and cost savings from service reuse. Some industry watchers and media surveys report that many, if not most companies, are engaged in some form of SOA initiaives -- but very few are at the point of realizing a positive return on their investments.

It should come as no surprise that companies seeing positive returns on their SOA initiatives are the early adopters in vertical industries such as financial services, telecommunications, energy, insurance and healthcare. These global leaders in technology optimization have embraced initiatives such as SOA as a core business strategy and are realizing positive returns. They also take a pragmatic approach, knowing that a successful SOA initiative depends on SOA quality...
