Mindreef SOAPscope server helps DTN deliver real-time weather
information to customers; resulting success promotes the development of
additional services
Boston, MA – Software Test & Performance Conference – November 6, 2006 — Underscoring the company’s growth and continued momentum, Mindreef®,®, and SOAPscope ServerTM
to test and verify the quality of Web services and to collaborate among
development teams. DTN can be added to Mindreef’s growing list of more
than 3,000 customers at 1,200 organizations worldwide that use its
software products as the foundation for Web services testing and SOA
quality. Today’s announcement is being made at the Software Test &
Performance Conference, where Mindreef is participating as a sponsor
and exhibitor.
DTN, a private company based in Omaha, Nebraska, is the leading
business-to-business provider of real-time market, news and weather
information services to agricultural and energy trading markets, and
other weather-sensitive industries. The company provides on-demand
market information, commodity cash prices, industry news, in-depth
analysis and location-specific weather to more than 120,000
subscribers.
DTN uses Mindreef’s Web services as a way to automate and deliver
real-time information and integrate data from several internal
departments. The first project was creating DTN’s patented technology
PrecipTimer™, a tool that allows users to know when rain, snow or ice
will begin, how long it will last and how much precipitation is
expected for a specific location, helping customers make informed
business decisions. For example, PrecipTimer is used by businesses on a
daily basis to determine crew and maintenance schedules, secure
materials or whether or not to evacuate a work site, based on the
amount of rainfall expected and exact timing as to when severe weather
will approach. DTN also is the official forecaster for the PGA TOUR and
Champions Tour and provides onsite weather forecasts during
tournaments; and advises theme parks when bad weather looms in order to
best protect guest’s safety.
The development team at DTN invested in Mindreef SOAPscope Server, an
award winning diagnostic and testing platform that helps individual
developers, testers, support engineers and consultants solve Web
services problems quickly. The DTN team, which was relatively new to
Web services at the time, was able to deliver PrecipTimer within two
months using SOAPscope Server’s comprehensive tools for testing,
diagnostics, governance and quality. The success of this project
initiated such trust in DTN’s Web services capabilities that
development efforts were expanded for the creation of several new
services.
"Mindreef helped us quickly test and verify our Web services
applications, making sure they are of high quality and as functional as
expected," said Mark Stevens, systems design engineer at DTN. "As a
development group, Mindreef also helps us ensure interoperability
between internal groups using a defined WSDL and an underlying
implementation of GSOAP. We appreciate the community based sharing of
different requests and the ability to track and repeat regression
testing efforts."
"We’re pleased that DTN chose Mindreef SOAPscope Server as its platform
of choice to create high-quality Web services and ensure maximum
adoption, business agility and service reuse, said Frank Grossman,
co-founder and president of Mindreef. "Like Mindreef, DTN recognizes
that SOA Quality is not only a key component of reaping the intended
benefits of SOA, it’s the strategy needed to achieve maximum business
benefit."
SOA Quality is the Foundation for Success
While the initial implementation of Web services and service-oriented
architecture can be a daunting task, DTN focused on quality at design
time rather than waiting for problems to occur in production, or
putting their deadline at risk with lengthy testing cycles. Their
proactive approach to quality across multiple teams involved in the
project was critical to the success of the Precip Timer service,
providing a level of trust that was needed to promote additional SOA
projects.
DTN’s testing and quality initiatives were faster, easier to execute
and more efficient, leading to collaborative quality efforts throughout
the service lifecycle. By laying a foundation for quality at the outset
of their initial Web services project with Mindreef, DTN has
established a process for success that will become a standard practice
as new services are added to their SOA, ensuring consistent trust and
reuse.
